a Christian life is not supposed to be a boring life

This summer, as I was considering what I was going to do with my life (knowing that St. Cloud was not where I could continue to stay), I bought several books from Barnes & Noble that were religious themed motivational books (to an extent). One of the books I bought (and the only one I read before deciding the next step in my life - moving to Fairmont) is a book by Mark Batterson. The book is: In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day: How to Survive and Thrive When Opportunity Roars. I'll probably mention more about this book in the future, but for now, I want to discuss a 'book byte' from his newest book, Wild Goose Chase, that I found on Mark's blog.

In his new book, he is discussing how God is unpredictable, and one of his chapters discusses a thought he had - considering whether or not angels yawn? He says theologically, it's a pointless idea to consider, but it's interesting to consider whether or not angels would even have the ability to be bored. He goes on from this consideration, to ask whether or not we are living our lives here on earth in a way that is making our own life boring, including boring our guardian angels.

I think it's a really interesting thought to consider. Life is short, so why live it in a way that is boring ourselves as well as those around us? Our faith should be calling us to live an unboring life, so how does it happen that so many people in the church appear to be the opposite of living life on the edge?

I'm not saying that anyone should start taking unnecessary risks in order to make their life interesting, but there are a lot of 'safer' risks that we can do. There are a lot of things we can do that are outside of our own boundaries but yet within the realm of not scaring our parents half to death. Some of those fears could be as 'simple' as taking on a ministry role at mass - cantoring, joining one of the music groups, ushering - all of these things can be intimidating in their own way. Other ways could be befriending someone who is left out or doing service projects to help others in need - just serving and doing something outside of our comfort zone. All of our actions to further God's kingdom involve some risk for our lives. Sometimes it's disapproval from friends or family, sometimes it's true danger because of the country or neighborhood that we choose to spread the gospel. But whenever I have taken on a 'risk,' no matter how small it may have been, afterwards I was always amazed at how I was able to push my boundaries and thrive.

So consider today, are you boring yourself? Are you living your faith in a boring way that doesn't fully mesh with what our faith is calling us to be? God is ready for action, and ready to assist you in delivering His message…so consider today what you could do to spice up your life and to further God's kingdom.

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13
